With 2016 coming to an end, one of the biggest launches next year will be 10nm. Manufacturers and consumers alike are waiting for the big update in hardware. Samsung and Qualcomm will take the lead, as they take the stage to announce the Snapdragon 835 and the tentatively dubbed Exynos 8895. To that end, TSMC and Samsung have already announced their big plans for the process. It was TSMC who took the lead in announcing that sufficient capabilities for 10nm production had been achieved. Now, with only a week remaining until 2017 is officially with us, some rather disappointing news is surfacing out of the East. Earlier this year, both Samsung and TSMC sounded confident with their plans for 10nm. Now, Taiwanese media is making claims to the contrary. According to sources, both the manufacturers are facing yield issues with respect to the next generation process.
For Samsung, we’ve been hearing similar news for quite a while. The Korean tech giant’s partnership with Qualcomm seemed to be at odds according to earlier information. Sources claimed that Samsung is facing production burdens for 10nm, resulting in Qualcomm’s orders being placed on the backburner. To that end, the US chip giant had been considering alternative venues for production, including TSMC.
However, even TSMC might not be safe from yield issues. Sources now claim that both the Taiwanese and Korean fabs aren’t able to achieve satisfactory yields. This information, if true will have far reaching implications for mobile processors in 2017. For TSMC, the fab’s first processor will be Apple’s A10X, due for the iPad Pro’s refresh next year. For Samsung, it’s own Exynos and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 are at risk.
In fact, sources claim that Samsung’s yield is even lower than that of TSMC, who itself isn’t seeing satisfactory results. Looks like we mihgt get to see a bumpy road for mobile processors next year. A lot of manufacturers including MediaTek and Huawei are relying on good yields for their products. 10nm is a big jump after all and will usher in the next era of mobile performance.
